The ascending toward Mikuni Pass was relatively mild one and our conversations about
bicycling eventually brought us to the pass. The long and dirt descending on Nakatsugawa
Forestry Road was a tough part. The old-fashioned cantilever breaks didn't have sufficient
stopping powers and my fingers collected some pains from the breaking pressures and
vibrations on the break levers. I somehow kept controlling the bike and we came back to the
paved surface.
The last climbing of the day was the one toward Haccho Pass. It was steep and long, but the
road was completely paved and we easily reached to the pass. And the descending to
Chichibu through Shigasaka Pass was 35-kilometers long and we somewhat got boring with its
long and mild descending. We finally reached to Takasago Horumon, Japanese barbecue
restaurant which is popular among Chichibu residents, just 10 minutes before our reservation
time. We enjoyed the juicy pork barbecue after a toast of beer to celebrate the completion of
our customary ride. Our experience made the 140 kilometers-long ride with 3,100 meters of
accumulated altitude change a very smooth ride without any unexpected events. It is needless to say that I fell into deep asleep in the coach of Seibu Chichibu Limited Express train on my
way to go back home.
