A long time ago, I belonged to a certain university bicycling club. Five graduates of the club
gathered at Saruhashi station of JR Chuo line to enjoy the riding on trails. Also, the ride was
to celebrate an acquisition of new mountain bike for one of the participants. Our target was
the 10km-long downhill trail from the peak of Mt. Gongen to Uenohara-City.
To enjoy the downhill ride, we of course had to climb for approximately 650 meters in
altitude. Most of uphill trail was too steep to ride. I had to push my Nitto MTB in the most
part and carried it on the shoulder sometimes. To make the matter worse, a swarms of gnat
attacked us and bit our legs relentlessly. Our pushing efforts continued for almost a hour
and we finally reached to the peak.
The trail from the peak of Mt. Gongen was definitely one of the best I ever visited.
Surprisingly, we could ride in the most part of trail and we enjoyed the technical downhill
ride which was like a meandering skiing in a slope for more than a hour. It was fun and
exciting experience indeed. I would like to visit the trail again in late autumn to appreciate
the beauty of autumn trees.
